1,4 - Butanediol, colloquially known as BD, is the organic compound with the formula HOCH2CH2CH2CH2OH. It is a colorless viscous liquid. It is one of four stable isomers of butanediol.

1,4 - butanediol (1,4 - BD) is a colorless, viscous liquid derived from butane by placement of
alcohol groups at each end of its molecular chain and is one of four stable isomers of
butanediol. 1,4 - BD has widespread industrial use. It is used in the production of spandex
fibers, urethane elastomers, and copolyester ethers. Sizable quantities of 1,4 - BD are also used
to make which has outlets in electronics, pharmaceuticals, and
agrochemicals, as well as high - performance polymers. Miscellaneous uses include its use in
solvents, coating resins, and as pharmaceutical intermediates. Worldwide production capacity
for 1,4 - BD is measured in the millions of metric tons/year.

Butane - 1,4 - diol is a butanediol that is butane in which one hydrogen of each of the methyl groups is substituted by a hydroxy group. A colourless, water - miscible, viscous liquid at room temperature (m. p. 16degreeC) with a high boiling point (230degreeC), it is mainly used for the production of other organic chemicals, particularly the solvent oxolane .  It has a role as a neurotoxin, a protic solvent and a prodrug. Application:

The major uses of 1,4 - butanediol, as reported by the Plastics and Chemicals Industries Association (PACIA) in 2005, are as an intermediate and chain extender in the production of urethane prepolymers, polyether diols, polyester polymers (particularly polybutylene terephthalate).

1,4 - butanediol is imported as a solid wax (99.5% purity) in 200L steel drums and also in formulated materials. It is on - sold in the same drums, decanted in 20L containers or formulated into blends (in various pack sizes) from which the 1,4 - butanediol can be readily recovered.

1,4 - Butanediol is used industrially as a solvent and in the manufacture of some types of plastics, elastic fibers and polyurethanes. In organic chemistry. In the presence of phosphoric acid and high temperature, it dehydrates to the important solvent tetrahydrofuran. At about 200 °C in the presence of soluble ruthenium catalysts, the diol undergoes dehydrogenation to form butyrolactone.
